General directions to Queen Mary University Of London and the Mile End Campus
QMUL is located in east London. It can be reached most easily via Heathrow Airport, which is served by London Underground’s Piccadilly line, as well as by a faster train service, the Heathrow Express. Both will take you into central London though you will need to change lines to complete your journey.
Stanstead Airport is also a good option, as transfer coach services run from the airport to Stratford regularly, and from Stratford it is just one stop on the central line to Mile End station.
More information about transport from specific airports, the Queen Mary campus as well as London transport can be found below including useful maps.
Getting to London
From Heathrow airport
The cheapest way to get to the Mile End campus from Heathrow airport is to use the London Underground. Take the Piccadilly Line eastbound to Hammersmith. Change trains at Hammersmith and take the District Line eastbound to Stepney Green.
From Gatwick airport
The cheapest way to get to the Mile End campus from Gatwick airport is to use the train and London Underground. Take the overground rail service from the airport to Victoria station in London. You will see signs for the train station at Gatwick in the airport, and trains to Victoria station in London are clearly advertised on the timetable boards in the ticket hall. Ask staff at the station if you are not sure which ticket you need, or where to catch your train. Once you reach Victoria, follow signs in the station for the Underground. Take the District Line eastbound to Stepney Green.
From Stansted airport
Trains run frequently from Stansted airport to Liverpool Street station in central London. From Liverpool Street underground station, take the eastbound Central line to Mile End station.
From London City airport
If arriving at London City, take the DLR from the airport to Stratford DLR Station (trains run from platform 2). At Stratford take the underground – westbound Central line one stop to Mile End station.
By taxi
If you arrive at one of London ‘s airports with a lot of luggage you could take a taxi to your accommodation, but this is expensive. Approximate fares using a licensed black cab from the airports are: Heathrow £60, Gatwick £100, Stansted £80.
These taxis run on meters which increase the fare both by distance and time, so if there is slow traffic the cost increases. Sometimes it is possible to agree a set price with the driver before travelling.

Public transport in London
Map
The easiest way to travel around london, is through the use of a contactless payment card or oyster card. Many standard bank card with contactless can be used to travel on the london rail and bus network. The appropriate fare will be charged, and receipts can be obtained through the TFL website, by creating an account and associating your bank card. More information can be found on the TFL Website.
There are two other options for paying fares – either a Visitor Oyster (smart card) or a paper Travelcard.
The Visitor Oyster Card scheme makes travel on public transport much easier and faster, and can be bought and delivered to you before you arrive in the UK. It is valid in all travel zones and automatically calculates the cheapest total fare for all the journeys you make in a single day.
The paper Travelcard is a pass which is valid for either a single day or seven days, and is available for certain combinations of travel zones. It is also valid on all public transport on the TfL network.
Whether you should get the Travelcard or Oyster card depends on how long you’re staying in London and how frequently you’ll be using public transport.
If you are in London for a week and plan to use only the central London Travelcard zones on a daily basis then a 7 day Travelcard might be the most cost-effective option. If you plan to stay in London for a shorter time or want to travel to the outskirts of the city, the pay-as-you-go Oyster card cost might be cheaper.
